Summer Plans

I always like to have something to look forward to…particularly vacations away from the day job, and travel.

One of my favorite things to do on a vacation is to go to an art workshop.   I’ve been to a few, and I’ve always come away with new tricks, inspiration, and new friends.    It’s very refreshing to go to “Art Camp” — where you’re usually in a beautiful and/or interesting place, with like-minded people, where someone else cooks delicious meals for you, and all you’re required to think about for a week or two is art.  What’s not to like?

So…I’ve just registered for a two week workshop at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN.    I’ll be studying with artists Lana Wilson and Sandi Pierantozzi .    I took a class with Lana a couple of years ago at Odyssey in Asheville, and that experience (and subsequent experiments) have definitely transformed my studio practice.    While she may go over some of the same techniques in this session, I’m looking forward to some additional input from her about my current work.  Sandi Pierantozzi will be a “guest artist” during the session, and I’m happily anticipating her demonstrations as well.

Another really cool thing about this trip will be that my longtime friend, metalsmith Ellen Crosby, will also be at Arrowmont that session, taking a class with Bob Ebendorf.  We’ve been scheming about workshopping together for several years, but haven’t managed to find compatible offerings until now.    Since I’m now making jewelry, I’m looking forward to her insights as well.

No, I didn’t run from the camera!

Those of you who know me well, know that I’m notoriously camera shy.  But today, I had a great experience with Lela Johnson/Great Outdoor Studio photography.  Lela came to the house and took lots of shots of the studio, some artwork, me in the studio with some artwork, along with a few non-clay-studio portrait shots.  It was quite fun and I really enjoyed myself.

More to come, but here’s a preview Lela posted this evening to her blog.  I can’t wait to see the rest, as I’ve seen lots of Lela’s work and she always makes everyone look fabulous!

Week 2 list progress

So here’s week 2 progress on the LIST:

28) Paint the bedroom walls grey.
Bought the paint.  Have brushed a little bit of trim.  It’s gonna look good :)

41) Redeem that Groupon for a month at Curves
Did this on Saturday.  I’ve been twice.  So far so good.

34) Take a digital photo class
Signed up for a 6 week community ed class at SFC.  Starts 1/25.  Looking forward to it!

64) Declutter the studio
This is a huge project, but I’ve made a start.  Tossed out the contents of several small buckets of dried up glaze that I haven’t used in over a year.

Progress on a few things…already!

I’ve made a wee bit of progress already for a few things on the 2012 List:

#96: (buy a new iron): Done! Got a good deal on a Rowenta iron at a post holiday sale.  A friend who saw I had marked that off the list commented that she hoped I’d just decided I didn’t need an iron :)    I’m not much for ironing…but occasionally it’s needed.

#16 (kitchen countertops): I did acquire a little kit from Home Depot to help in estimating square footage.  Still trying to decide what material to use.

#28 (bedroom painting): Paint + accessories acquired.

#34 (photo class):  I registered for a 6-week community ed class that starts 1/25.  I’m excited about learning more about my newish DSLR Camera.  I’ve had it a few months, but haven’t ventured past super auto mode.

#78 (closet purge):  I have a big pile of things to go to the Hospice thrift store….but a few more items still to be weeded.

100 things to do in 2012

‘Tis the season for resolutions…and I’m no different.   Often I indulge in a few self-improvment mantras, mostly doomed to failure by February 1st,  but this year I thought I’d try something different.  First off…this is not an original idea.   Last year, one of my favorite bloggers, Summer Pierre, posted her list of 100 things I want to do in 2011.  Wow…I thought this was such a great idea.  And I even showed this to several of my friends early in the year, saying..WOW isn’t this a great idea?!  But I never got around to doing it myself.    I’ve followed Summer’s progress on her list last year, and her comments about how beneficial having her list has been to her general outlook, well-being, productivity, etc.  So I’ve decided to try it.  I even stole her layout…as smashing them all up into paragraph form seems less intimidating than a 100-line list.

Things on my list (which are in no particular order) include a few obligatory self-improvement items, lots of art-related goals, lots of fun stuff, just a few day-job related items (since there are other more bureaucratic lists of goals existing elsewhere for THAT), some home improvement projects, and various things I know I’ll do anyway, but that will be satisfying to cross off the list. (First up, #96–purchased at an after-Christmas sale!)   Most are at least somewhat measurable, although there are few ongoing and/or ethereal entries — in particular #100, which is more a daily mantra than anything else.   I’ll make an effort to detail progress here on the blog, which should help accomplish #54!
